Tech's Last Call Episode 3: Best of 2012

This week, we ring out the old year by running down our top stories of 2012. It was all about IPOs, CEOs, and the problems caused by the PTO. Rovers roved. Surfaces hit, and the Galaxy Far, Far Away moved to the House of the Mouse. So give it up for 2012, since we are still here to celebrate its end rather than our own.

  3. Microsoft, for the first time in history, makes a PC (ish)

BEST DEVICE OF THE YEAR

Nominees:

  • The Galaxy S3 for being the overall best smartphone and the first smartphone to truly surpass the iPhone
  • The Lenovo Yoga for being the best of the crop of new Windows 8 convertible laptops and hopefully heralding a new era of innovation in PC design
  • The Microsoft Surface for making great strides in solving the tablet that does work dilema

Winner: The Microsoft Surface RT

WORST DEVICE OF THE YEAR

Nominees:

  • The new iPod Nano for inexplicably being both similar to the iPod Touch but worse with almost no apps to speak of and with almost the same price
  • Any non-Nexus Android tablet for never being able to get it right or capture any meaningful market share despite two full years of attempts
  • Any PC made by HP. Their quality has been going downhill for years and this year they lost their top position in PC sales

Winner: The Microsoft Kin

BEST SOCIAL NETWORK

Nominees:

  • Facebook for being the biggest, breaking a billion users, and making money while doing it
  • Pinterest for doing something that no one else is doing in the social game and capturing a unique space in the market
  • Instagram for being everyone's favorite hipster image sharing site

Winner: Pinterest
